In general, Coaching is a process to help other people to use their own abilities to the maximum. This implies highlighting the strengths of people, helping them to overcome their internal barriers and limitations to achieve the best of themselves, making it possible for them to act more effectively as members of a team. Thus, effective coaching requires having a simultaneous emphasis on the task and the relationship.

Coaching emphasizes generative change, concentrating on the definition and achievement of specific objectives. Coaching methods are results oriented rather than problem oriented. They tend to be highly solution-focused, promoting the development of new strategies of thought and action, as opposed to attempting to solve past problems and conflicts. Problem solving or remedial change is more associated with counseling and therapy.
Interestingly, the term “Coach” comes from the name of a small Hungarian town, Koks, where supreme wagons, carts and carriages were made Kocs was located on the main road that ran along the Danube between Vienna and Budapest. These two great cities needed fast, well-built vehicles that were capable of carrying more than two people over the bumpy roads of the time as comfortably as possible. One of the best chariots, drawn by several horses, light, reasonably comfortable, and with four wheels, with a strap suspension, was called in Hungarian szekér kocsi, literally "a car of Kocs". It was so compact, elegant and strong that the design spread throughout Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Viennese called the vehicle Kutsche, in honor of the Hungarian city. In Paris, the French adapted the Austrian word to Car. In Rome it became cocchio. Finally, the vehicle appeared in England and was called Coach.

Thus, Coach originally meant "wagon or car" and still retains this meaning, for example, when a person travels by train or airline (economy class in Spanish). A "Coach" is literally a vehicle that takes a person or group of people from an initial point to a desired point.

A Coach was originally a vehicle that transports people from a present point to a desired point.
